Mac Jones breaks silence about staying with 49ers after trade rumors

Even before the San Francisco 49ers suffered a brutal 41-6 divisional-round playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks this past January, it felt like a matter of when and not if 49ers backup quarterback Mac Jones would be traded to a team willing to name him its starter for at least the 2026 season.

However, no such trade materialized before the 49ers gave Jones a small pay bump to reward him for his play during the 2025 campaign. While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Jones addressed remaining with the 49ers to serve as the primary backup for starter Brock Purdy until further notice.

Mac Jones not "mad" he wasn't traded this offseason

"I also love it here, and I'm not really in the business of leaving good people, so I'm not mad about it at all," Jones said, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "I think it's a great organization, and I did a lot of fun stuff last year, but it's a new year. I feel like this is the first year I've had the same offensive playbook, being in the NFL. So, that's kind of nice. If you go to a new team, you've got to learn a new playbook again and kind of do everything over, so it's good. I'm excited, and really, just looking forward to this summer and getting everything going again."

Jones went 5-3 last season when Purdy was sidelined with a toe injury. Some assumed Jones' performances would make him a hot commodity among quarterback-needy teams this offseason, but numerous clubs instead went in different directions.

In April, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted he was "really surprised" that no team matched San Francisco's asking price for Jones' services. Jones doesn't seem to be losing sleep over the situation.

"I feel like I can stack another good year," Jones added. "Whenever I'm needed, that's my job, is to support Brock. It's his team, and he played very well towards the end of the year, and I feel like it was just a lot of fun. We want to continue that—the good vibes in there—and I'm looking forward to trying not to focus on the future, just focus on now."

Mac Jones gives update on shoulder issue

Eyebrows were raised when Jones didn't throw during voluntary workouts over the past couple of weeks. It sounds like he will be good to go when he and his teammates get back together in late July.

"Just a little soreness in my shoulder," Jones explained. "Everything's clean and looks good, so just kind of being precautionary, I guess, is the word. But yeah, I'll be ready for training camp."

History shows the 49ers may need a healthy Jones to play at some point this coming fall.
