This has been an eventful offseason for New York Giants star WR Malik Nabers, though for all the wrong reasons.
He's still dealing with an injury, and he was recently detained by the police in a mistaken identity case.
Head coach John Harbaugh didn't sound too excited about his recovery progress, and the Giants' flurry of WR signings raised even more doubts.
However, it seems that he might be ready for the start of the season after all, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan.
“He’s far away from being ready for football, but on the flipside, you have three-plus months right now to get ready…That’s a decent amount of time to hope your knee gets better. At the same time, it hasn’t been a great – you know, clean rehab. So that has to have you a bit concerned when it comes to Malik Nabers,” Raanan reported.
While that doesn't sound necessarily encouraging, he's still striving to get back on the field without missing any more time with this complex knee injury.
“From what I’ve heard, and the people that I’ve talked to, right now, barring another setback…his timeline is around that Week 1 area. So yeah, maybe he’s not ready for Week 1, but I think, realistically…he’ll be back early in the year. Similar to what happened with Andrew Thomas last year,” added Raanan.
Even so, the Giants are leaving no stone unturned in trying to help Jaxson Dart and the passing game.
Just this week, they signed Braxton Berrios, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Odell Beckham Jr., though it sounds unlikely that they'll keep all three veterans on the 53-man roster.
Nabers is one of the most promising wide receivers in the game, and he should be the focal point of the offense once he gets back to full strength. That said, a lot can still happen in the next three months.
