Odell Beckham Jr. acknowledges harsh reality about reunion with Giants

Pockets of New York Giants fans experienced flashbacks to their younger days when the team confirmed earlier in the week that it had brought veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. back to the organization.

It was later learned that Beckham, Braxton Berrios and JuJu Smith-Schuster "were all signed to minimum deals" and "will have to earn their spots on the roster." While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Beckham acknowledged that his return to the Giants could be short-lived if he fails to impress through late August.

Odell Beckham Jr. vows to "earn anything" he can get with Giants

"I felt great being back out there," Beckham explained, per Bobby Kownack of the NFL's website. "Being back in the building, on this field. Looking at this stadium. It's a pretty surreal feeling. I know I have a lot of work to do. [Head coach John Harbaugh] and I have already talked about it. I came here to earn anything. Everything in my life, nothing was given to me. I came here to earn it and work hard every day and do what's best for the team."

History suggests the version of Beckham who earned three Pro Bowl nods with the Giants during his first stint with the club, which ran from the opening night of the 2014 NFL Draft through the 2018 season, is but a memory. He hasn't played in a regular-season game since he recorded nine catches for 55 yards over nine contests with the Miami Dolphins during the 2024 campaign. Additionally, the 33-year-old has an injury history filled with noteworthy setbacks.

That said, Harbaugh reportedly "loves" Beckham from when the former was the latter's head coach with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2023 season. That love allegedly won't impact whether or not Beckham is on the Giants' active roster come September.

"Coach and I talked about it," Beckham explained, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. "I think that was one of his fears. He's like, 'I love you so much and have so much respect for you. I don't want to bring you here and have to cut you.' I was like, 'Listen. I'm going out on my sword either way it goes. If that's what you have to do when you see that I'm not at my best or not fit, then by all means, I'm good with it.' I can't live with sitting at home not doing it. I just couldn't do it. Like I said, it's not who I am."

Odell Beckham Jr. wants to help Malik Nabers

Beckham has experience playing in the New York market and working to return from ACL injuries. Thus, he somewhat knows what third-year Giants receiver Malik Nabers is going through this offseason.

"I think I can be a great asset for him," Beckham said about Nabers. "Even when I wasn't here, I was hitting him up and being like, no offense, 'I know how [the media is]. I know how they are. I'm telling you.' ...I think when you go through an injury like that, for a minute, it hardens you, but then it gives you lots of experience, lots of knowledge, and you get to learn a lot about yourself. Through this process, which has been a tough process, I think he comes out on the other end better. I can't wait to see him back on the field. Obviously, we know what kind of player he is, but however I can help him and everybody else, trust me, I know all the things to do and I know the things not to do."
