How Vikings' J.J. McCarthy has reportedly responded after reports about Kyler Murray competition

Shortly after the Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray to a team-friendly contract earlier this offseason, numerous reporters and analysts named him as the favorite to defeat 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy in a competition for the team's starting quarterback job.

Murray reportedly has been the more impressive of the two signal-callers throughout springtime workouts. However, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero suggested during a Thursday appearance on KFAN FM 100.3 that McCarthy has shown signs of improvement from where the 23-year-old was the last time he faced a live defense in a meaningful game.

J.J. McCarthy has "made strides" amid Kyler Murray competition

"J.J.’s made strides," Pelissero explained, as shared by Eduardo Razo of Heavy. "I think everybody who’s watched him throw can see that, mechanically, he looks a little bit different than he has in the past."

A May report revealed that McCarthy "spent weeks with private throwing coach John Beck" during the offseason to work on aspects of his game, such as his ball placement and footwork. McCarthy spent his entire rookie season recovering from a full meniscus repair, and he thus far has made just 10 career regular-season starts.

While McCarthy apparently remains a work in progress, Murray has been as advertised with the Vikings during on-the-field work.

"Kyler comes in as just, you know, he’s a baller, man," Pelissero continued. "You’ve known that. You know the off-schedule things that he’s capable of doing. You’ve got to find out whether he can consistently play the position the way the Vikings want him to, in terms of playing on time and being a good decision-maker."

When could Vikings name their Week 1 starting quarterback?

Reports indicating that Murray held a significant lead in the competition understandably led some to think that Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell could name a Week 1 QB1 earlier than expected. It sounds like McCarthy may have to shine before Minnesota's preseason opener at the New York Giants on Aug. 15 to keep this battle going through the summer.

"I don’t believe that Kevin needs to take this all the way through the third preseason game to determine his starting quarterback," Pelissero said. "You’re probably going to have a pretty good idea by the end of the spring which direction this is going to go."

The Vikings' mandatory minicamp is scheduled to get underway on June 9. One wonders if McCarthy could eventually request a trade if it becomes clear during those sessions that he is Minnesota's second-choice option.
