For two decades Curt Menefee has been the host of FOX NFL Sunday and ranks among FOX's top hosts for all football-related content. But as he leads FOX's coverage of the Belmont Stakes in horse racing today, fans are finding that he's in over his head.

FOX received the broadcast rights to the Belmont Stakes in 2023 and have done their best to match the energy that NBC has brough to the iconic race in the previous decade.

Menefee has been joined by the likes of Charissa Thompson, Tom Amoss, Richard Migliore, Chris Fallica and Jonathon Kinchen - all of whom know their stuff when it comes to racing.

Criticism for Menefee

But for the fans watching at home, Menefee's performance sticks out like a sore thumb.

"Sorry FOX but Curt Menefee is over his head talking horses. The number of mistakes he’s said during this broadcast is off the charts. Plenty of other announcers who can do the job," one user wrote on X.

"Mike Tirico is Secretsriat. Curt Menefee is Twice a Prince. There is a 31 length difference between the two in hosting televised horse racing. #BelmontStakes," another wrote.

"I don’t know what’s worse on TV right now. 1. Watching the Pirates get owned by Atlanta. 2. Watching a rained delay Memorial Golf Tournament show last year’s replay, or 3. Watching Curt Menefee trying to host the Belmont Stakes," wrote a third.

Ouch.

Menefee did have one good moment on today's broadcast though. He came up with the idea of an outside sponsor offering a massive reward for a horse that wins the Triple Crown in response to issues with the three Triple Crown races struggling to field the top horses. But other than that, it's becoming clear that today is simply not his best work.

Menefee has nearly 40 years of broadcast experience, which has taken him coast to coast and north to south. But while he may be passionate enough about horse racing to lead a broadcast about it, it seems that he has some more learning to do about the sport.
