The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition might not be shaping the way J.J. McCarthy hoped.
As expected, veteran Kyler Murray has turned some heads in Kevin O'Connell's system, and the former Michigan star faces an uphill battle to hold onto the QB1 job.
Murray is on a one-year, "prove it" deal, and while the Vikings have given McCarthy a chance to impress with first-team reps, it looks like he has plenty of catching up to do.
When asked about the quarterback competition, the Vikings' new general manager, Nolan Teasley, didn't necessarily endorse Murray, but his comments were quite telling.
“The physical talent is there. He can make all the throws. He can create off-schedule, and this is not a slight to anybody, but this offensive staff and coach O’Connell, that’s the untapped potential. He’s going to realize, I think, another level of development,” Teasley told Paul Allen.
Of course, this will ultimately be Kevin O'Connell's decision, but the Vikings signing Murray this offseason spoke volumes about their feelings toward McCarthy.
Former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was McCarthy's biggest fan in the building, and with him gone, the future looks blurry for the former first-round pick.
Murray still needs to prove that he's got something left in the tank after some injury-riddled and disappointing campaigns with the Arizona Cardinals.
But barring another injury or a shocking turn of events, he'll star under center for the Vikings when they host the Green Bay Packers for the season opener.
