Detroit Tigers generational talent Kevin McGonigle is the current betting favorite (-135) to win the AL Rookie of the Year award this season.
Following a hamstring injury to Munetaka Murakami, he no longer sits as the main competition, giving McGonigle the opportunity to take the lead as the top contender for the award.
His veteran-level plate discipline has him boasting an elite 19.1% chase rate, 14.1% walk rate and 13 % strikeout rate. Also, his reliable on-base percentage of .394 leads all qualified MLB rookies, and he has an impressive 3.4 Wins Above Replacement (WAR).
It has unquestionably made him an offensive force for the Tigers while also providing defensive versatility by splitting time between shortstop and third base this season.

At 21 years old, he was the youngest player to make the AL Opening Day roster this season. Performing like an elite superstar, his compelling 1.056 walk-to-strikeout rate ranks ninth in all of MLB.
On the season, McGonigle is riding a .291 batting average with four home runs, 24 RBI, nine stolen bases and a stellar .820 OPS.
McGonigle has made a rapid progression, effortlessly transitioning from Double-A straight to MLB. In his MLB debut, he provided an immediate impact, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles in the Tigers' 8-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.
He has also logged valuable innings, with his most recent dominant strut coming in the Tigers' 5-4 comeback victory against the Seattle Mariners on June 7.
His heroic performance included a game-tying home run (109.4 mph average exit velocity) in the fourth inning and then a walk-off, two-run single in the ninth inning to secure the win.
