White Sox rookie makes history with walk-off home run in dominant MLB debut

Setting the bar as high as possible, Chicago White Sox rookie Braden Montgomery made sure his MLB debut was a memorable one on Tuesday night.

Montgomery capped off his first game in the big leagues in style, sending the home fans home happy after a walk-off 6-5 win in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Braden Montgomery made history with his final swing of the bat in his MLB debut

Going 2-for-5 after being called up from the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, Montgomery made history by becoming only the fifth player to ever hit a walk-off home run in his MLB debut.

Carlos Perez was the last rookie to blast a walk-off in his first MLB game over a decade ago in 2015. Before Perez, Miguel Cabrera started his legendary career with a game-winning homer. Cabrera's moment came a year after Josh Bard accomplished the first walk-off home run in a debut since Billy Parker did it in 1971.

With his team trailing 5-4 and two outs already on the board, Montgomery, 23, crushed an 0-1 pitch over the fence to the right of the foul pole in left field. The two-run shot ignited the crowd at Guaranteed Rate Field and handed the White Sox a 6-5 win over the MLB-best Atlanta Braves.

Braden Montgomery recorded his first career hit and RBI in the fourth inning

It wasn't his first career hit, that came in the fourth inning. It wasn't his first career RBI, as his earlier base hit sent a runner home. But Montgomery's walk-off home run stands as the biggest hit of his professional baseball career to date, and it will be tough to top any time soon.

While no one could've expected a walk-off on night one, Montgomery is no stranger to the long ball. He connected on 10 home runs between his time with Charlotte in Triple-A and in Birmingham in AA.

It remains to be seen how Montgomery is used moving forward, but what he does for an encore will be a must-watch on Wednesday in the second game of Chicago's series with the Braves.
