While Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett attended the team's mandatory minicamp this week, fellow journeyman Gardner Minshew II took the majority of the first-unit reps after Brissett stayed away from the club throughout voluntary workouts amid his much-publicized desire for an adjusted contract.
Josh Weinfuss of ESPN has said throughout the spring that Brissett "was told by the Cardinals after free agency that he was their starting quarterback." While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, first-year Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur indicated that no quarterback on his roster has been promised anything regarding the depth chart ahead of the NFL's summer break.
"I'm not really concerned about QB1 right now," LaFleur explained, per Darren Urban of the Cardinals' website. "I'm concerned about these guys reporting (to training camp). Really, I'm concerned about them for the next 40 days and what they are doing…you can't take steps backwards, and that's not just the quarterbacks. That's all these guys."
Whether or not Brissett truly "deserves" a bump in pay after he went 1-11 across 12 starts last season may be irrelevant. He seemingly doesn't have many desirable options, unless he's willing to forfeit money by skipping training-camp practices to prove a point, as there's no indication that any other team would be willing to trade for him and then immediately pay him to be its QB1.
Meanwhile, some think that LaFleur could ultimately give Minshew a chance to "win" the starting job over both Brissett and rookie Carson Beck. It's presumed that LaFleur wants Beck to spend at least a portion of his rookie season learning about life in the NFL as a backup.
"Beck would figure to be behind Brissett and Minshew on the depth chart," Urban wrote.
LaFleur added that "conversations will be ongoing" with Brissett about the quarterback's contract situation.
"We don't play again until September," LaFleur continued. "It is June whatever-it-is. Not worried about (the QB depth chart) right now."
Players are expected to report for the Cardinals' training camp on July 22. It remains to be seen if Brissett will receive what he wants from the club before that Wednesday arrives.
