While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Minnesota Vikings superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson made it known that he understands it will be his "coach's call" regarding whether free-agency signing Kyler Murray or 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy is ultimately named the team's Week 1 starting quarterback.
Also on Thursday, Vikings receiver Jordan Addison indicated he already has solid chemistry with Murray.
"I’ll say it’s been good," Addison said about his working relationship with Murray, per Eduardo Razo of Heavy. "Kyler is a lot of fun to work with. He’s smart. He’s talented. He’s obviously a veteran and somebody that I can learn under, and he can learn from me as well because I’ve been in the offense for a little bit. I’m honestly just ready to roll…"
The perception has existed for some time that Murray is the favorite to win the competition. However, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed on Thursday that he would not be naming a QB1 before the NFL's summer break.
Murray raised some eyebrows when he sounded frustrated this week over the fact that he is having to learn a new offense while also splitting reps with McCarthy.
"We’re both learning from each other and feeding off each other," Addison added about Murray on Thursday. "He’s asking me questions, and I’m asking him questions. When I’m running through my routes, I’m asking him what he sees. It’s just constant feedback and constant learning."
Before the Vikings officially signed Murray, the previously mentioned Jefferson seemed to take some veiled shots at McCarthy this past winter. It sounds like Addison is hyped that Murray is now on the Vikings' roster.
"I was excited just to add to that room," Addison said about the club's quarterback situation. "I’ll just say that I was excited and excited to see this competition play out come July and August. It’s a competition for everybody, not just that room. Nobody’s job is guaranteed."
Murray and McCarthy are both expected to complete throwing sessions with teammates during the summer. They will then use training-camp practices to prepare for Minnesota's preseason opener at the New York Giants on Aug. 15.
