The New York Knicks are NBA champions for the first time since 1973. The team had a stunning win on Saturday, taking out the San Antonio Spurs on the road with a 94-90 win to notch the kind of victory that was nothing short of historic.
The Spurs led by 16 in the first half and had a healthy 42-37 lead at halftime. But, New York was just too powerful for San Antonio to overcome, and it powered through to inch out a lead and end the game in the green.
Knicks star Jalen Brunson was emotional after the win. He said that he had "no words" but was able to try to articulate his feelings.
"I have no words. It's everything I've ever dreamed of," he said, as shared by the NBA on Instagram. "I don't know what I'm feeling. I'm in awe. I don't know. Whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to do something about."
The Knicks didn't just win on Saturday. They notched NBA history. Hours after the win, the NBA took to social media to announce that the Knicks are the first team since the 1971 NBA Finals to trail by 10-plus points in every game of the series and still win the championship.
Brunson also made quite a bit of history. The Knicks guard, who was crowned NBA Finals MVP, scored 45 points in Game 5. According to the NBA, that ties Michael Jordan's showing in Game 6 of the 1998 Finals for the most points scored on the road in an NBA Finals-clinching game. It was a night filled with history and now New York can celebrate.
