Deion Sanders breaks silence about Browns' QB competition

The state of the competition involving Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson for the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback job will unquestionably be the biggest story hovering over the franchise until first-year Browns head coach Todd Monken names his Week 1 QB1.

Of course, Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders is understandably pulling for his son to get the nod over Watson. During a recent chat with DJ Siddiqi of ClutchPoints, Deion Sanders opened up about Shedeur's attempts to prove his worth to Monken, Browns general manager Andrew Berry and team co-owner Jimmy Haslam.

Deion Sanders understands Shedeur Sanders is going to "face haters"

"Well, of course, I'm his dad," Deion said about Shedeur. "No, I haven't spoken to him (said Sanders, sarcastically). I'm just dad. Of course, man. He's gonna face haters like he's always had. He's not gonna face anything new that he hasn't faced in the entirety of his life."

Some of those haters may be observers who said that neither Shedeur Sanders nor Watson performed all that well in springtime workouts open to media members. Additionally, a recent report suggested that "everybody" in the Browns' building "knows" that Haslam "wants Watson to play and try to earn" what's left of the fully guaranteed five-year, $230M contract that the Browns gave Watson in March 2022.

Shedeur Sanders "likes when odds are stacked up against him"

In May, Deion Sanders revealed that he wanted to meet with Monken "as a coach, not the dad." For what it's worth, Monken later said he "can’t wait" to spend time with Deion at some point.

"He's always been up against the eight ball," Deion Sanders added about Shedeur. "He's always been really undervalued, not really appreciated like he should, and he always comes through. He likes when odds are stacked up against him."

The competition between Shedeur Sanders and Watson will officially start back up when the Browns open training camp in late July. The battle is expected to run through at least Cleveland's preseason opener at the Chicago Bears on Aug. 15.

It's unclear if Deion Sanders will visit the Browns during training camp.
