Browns reportedly make major Brendan Sorsby decision amid renewed Eagles rumors

The football world was surprised to learn on Monday night that Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby plans to enter this year's supplemental draft for the NFL following his back-and-forth battles regarding his college eligibility that involved the NCAA, the Big 12 and the university.

Shortly after the news broke, ESPN's Ben Solak was among those who suggested that the Cleveland Browns could consider taking a flier on Sorsby during the supplemental draft. Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer quickly poured cold water over such takes.

Brendan Sorsby not on Browns' radar?

According to Cabot, "the Browns are unlikely to bid on" Sorsby during the supplemental draft after he checked into a residential treatment program to deal with a gambling addiction earlier this spring.

"The thing that makes it difficult is that he’s so early in his recovery process that it’s impossible to know if he’ll stay clean," Cabot explained.

Cabot's update is hardly surprising, as multiple May reports indicated the Browns would not be interested in Sorsby if he became available to NFL teams during the summer. Later, first-year Browns head coach Todd Monken said he felt adding Sorsby to the roster ahead of the upcoming season was "a slippery slope."

Currently, Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson are set to compete for the Browns' 2026 Week 1 starting job. It sounds like they won't be sharing a quarterback room with Sorsby during training camp

"The Browns have already done extensive background on Sorsby (6-3, 230), a big dual-threat passer, because he contemplated coming out in the 2026 draft," Cabot added.

Could Eagles make surprising Brendan Sorsby decision?

It was previously suggested that Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman could consider grabbing Sorsby if the signal-caller entered the supplemental draft. Many in-the-know individuals think current Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts is heading into a make-or-break season regarding his Philadelphia tenure. Meanwhile, a recent rumor hinted that Roseman could target Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson if Jackson doesn't sign a contract extension later this summer.

"Jalen Hurts has no guaranteed money beyond this season, and the Eagles are always looking to upgrade," NFL insider Jason La Canfora wrote for Casino.org. "Even a past Super Bowl MVP might not be enough unless Hurts steps up his game. 'They are ready to move off Hurts if they have to,' the GM said."

For what it's worth, Solak also named the Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers as potential landing spots for Sorsby. To get Sorsby, it would cost a team the price of the traditional draft pick for 2027 equal to the value of the 2026 supplemental draft selection.
