Multiple May reports indicated that the Cleveland Browns would not be interested in Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby if he were to enter this year's supplemental draft for the NFL.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, first-year Browns head coach Todd Monken seemed to confirm those reports.
"That’s not even come across my desk," Monken said about the Browns possibly taking a flier on Sorsby, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road. ...I like the quarterbacks that we have. I think that’s a slippery slope, when you go down that [path] — irrespective of talent — in terms of the situation he’s put himself in. We all know what that is. He put himself in that situation. And we’ve seen in other sports with players that have been banned for life from playing in professional sports."
Sorsby checked into a residential treatment program to deal with a gambling addiction earlier this spring. As of Tuesday, the signal-caller was attempting to have his eligibility for the upcoming college football season temporarily reinstated. He could declare for the supplemental draft this summer if his request is denied, but it sounds like he can cross Cleveland off his list of potential destinations.
"I think that’s a slippery slope to go down that road," Monken continued. "Again, that’s a question for [general manager Andrew Berry] and for management. But from my end of it, kind of a tough angle to go down that road and think that’s going to be your franchise quarterback — if he’s ever eligible to even play in the NFL."
Meanwhile, numerous stories have mentioned that Deshaun Watson has a significant lead over Shedeur Sanders in the competition for the Browns' starting quarterback job.
"I anticipate there still being competition," Monken said. "That doesn’t mean that the reps will be equal. That’s the easiest way to put it. I think we’re in a good place right now with our quarterback room. All of the guys that are in there are working hard, and I like the level of talent that we have in there. But the next six days will go a long way into how we go into fall camp."
Also on Monday, the Browns traded two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams for edge-rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round draft pick, a 2028 second-round selection and a 2029 third-round choice. Many outsiders assume Berry made that deal so he will be able to land a top-tier quarterback prospect in the 2027 draft.
