Shortly after it was learned on Monday night that Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby plans to enter this year's supplemental draft for the NFL, ESPN's Ben Solak mentioned that "Sorsby is far more exciting as a developmental player" than current New York Jets signal-callers Geno Smith and Cade Klubnik.
While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, second-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was asked about Sorsby.
"I’m focused on the guys that we have here now," Glenn explained, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "I’m sure that’s something me and [general manager Darren Mougey] will talk about. I got the quarterbacks here that we focus on right now."
While Smith is the Jets' undisputed starter for Week 1 of the 2026 season, he is a journeyman who likely isn't a long-term answer for any club at this point. Klubnik is a fourth-round draft pick who is basically a lottery-ticket item for Gang Green. Neither 2025 undrafted rookie Brady Cook nor fellow backup Bailey Zappe has as much promise as Sorsby.
That said, Sorsby's much-publicized red flags could ultimately scare off the Jets and other teams. Earlier in the spring, he checked into a residential treatment program to deal with a gambling addiction. He has admitted to gambling on Indiana games when he was a member of that program, and some clubs reportedly fear that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell "will impose a significant suspension on Sorsby" before the upcoming season gets underway.
Earlier this month, first-year Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken said that he felt taking a flier on Sorsby this summer was "a slippery slope." On Monday night, it was reported that "the Browns are unlikely to bid on" Sorsby during the supplemental draft.
"I have no idea what that is, to be honest with you," Glenn said in response to a question about Sorsby’s gambling history. "I heard about it. I’ve seen it on TV, but I don’t want to respond to that because I have no idea of the inner workings of that. Not fair to that player for me to do that."
One may find it interesting that Glenn didn't close the door on acquiring Sorsby, which is what Monken seemed to do before Cleveland players began their summer breaks. Landing Sorsby in July would cost the Jets the price of the traditional draft pick in the 2027 draft equal to the value of the 2026 supplemental draft choice.
