Panthers' Jalen Coker makes feelings on Bryce Young clear amid uncertainty

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker recently received a three-year contract extension worth $35M that should keep him married to the organization for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, quarterback Bryce Young may soon enter a make-or-break season as it pertains to his tenure with the Panthers. During a recent NFL Network appearance, Coker spoke highly of his QB1.

Bryce Young now "commands the room" as the Panthers starter

"I think it really goes back to just him as a person," Coker said about Young, per Avik Das of Heavy. "You know, his leadership, the way that he commands the room."

Earlier this spring, a story detailed how Young showed during the offseason program that he was becoming a more vocal leader. That's all well and good, but the fact remains that the Panthers have made no commitment to Young outside of picking up the fifth-year option for 2027 attached to his rookie contract.

As recently as Tuesday, ESPN's Ben Solak suggested that the Panthers could take a flier on Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby during the upcoming supplemental draft. Such a move would offer a hint that people within the Panthers aren't convinced that Young is the team's long-term answer at the position. It sounds like Coker wouldn't agree with such assessments.

Jalen Coker hyped "to win games" with Bryce Young

"You want to play for a guy like that, you know, especially when he’s amped up out there having a good time," Coker added about Young. "The whole team feeds off of that energy, and he’s really, really good at football. Like, I mean, he makes the hard stuff look so easy, and I’m just truly blessed to be able to be out there with him, and just continue to win games."

It's unclear how many games Young may have to win from September through January 2027 to receive a multiyear extension from his current employer. Then again, the Panthers could make quite a statement about Young's uncertain future with the team if he finds himself sharing the Carolina quarterback room with Sorsby before the 2026 season gets underway.
