The Chicago Cubs have been one of the most inconsistent teams in Major League Baseball this season.
They still haven't gotten out of their May slump, and with the Aug. 3 deadline looming large, they might have to make a tough call.
ESPN listed Seiya Suzuki as a potential trade chip in the Windy City, as his contract expires at the end of the season and the Cubs could use some help on the mound. The New York Yankees were among several potential suitors mentioned for the Japanese slugger.
“Chicago wants to get creative to fill its pitching issues, and that means at least listening on Suzuki, who will be a free agent at the end of the season,” the article read. “Considering the paucity of impact outfielders available, Chicago could try to take advantage of the market and lean into its depth with Michael Conforto and Kevin Alcantara.”
ESPN also listed the Rays, Mariners, Marlins, Padres, Phillies, Diamondbacks and Cardinals, but none of them might make as much sense as the Bronx Bombers.
Aaron Judge will be out for a while, and even when he returns, there will always be durability concerns with him and Giancarlo Stanton.
Suzuki would give them another reliable bat for October, and their stacked starting rotation gives them more than enough options to consider sending to Chicago.
According to Baseball Reference, Suzuki is slashing .256/.343/.433. with 10 home runs and 28 RBI this season. He's fresh off slashing .245/.326/.478 with 108 RBI and 32 dingers last year, and his numbers would probably be even better in a hitter-friendly ballpark like Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees haven't been as aggressive in the trade market in recent years, but with a World Series drought to end, Brian Cashman might finally want to make a big move.
