Since it was first learned earlier this week that former Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby planned to enter this year's supplemental draft for the NFL, multiple Cleveland Browns reporters strongly suggested that the team is "unlikely to bid on" Sorsby during next month's player-selection process.
It appears not everybody who covers the team feels the same way about this particular subject.
"There’s no doubt in my mind the Browns will bid on Brendan Sorsby," Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand shared via X (formerly known on Twitter) on Thursday night. "The question is how high will they go."
Before Grossi offered his update, a story claimed that the Browns "really don’t want to deal with the sports gambling baggage that Sorsby would bring with him." Sorsby previously checked into a residential treatment program to deal with a gambling addiction, has admitted to gambling on Indiana games when he was a member of that team and may have to serve "a significant suspension" later this year.
As recently as Thursday, well-known Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer revealed that "discussions" she has had led her to "feel strongly" that Cleveland will not attempt to land Sorsby.
The supplemental draft will take place on or before July 16. Winning Sorsby's rights via that process would cost the Browns or a different team the corresponding pick in next year’s standard draft.
Grossi later teased that the Browns may not go higher than a third-round pick for Sorsby. For what it's worth, NFL insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom US mentioned this week that "Sorsby is expected to go in the second round."
Heading into Father's Day weekend, 2025 rookie Shedeur Sanders and veteran Deshaun Watson are on track to resume the competition for the Cleveland starting quarterback job once training camp practices get underway in late July. Fans will know by then whether or not Sorsby will be part of the Browns' quarterback picture.
