Layne Riggs wins wild NASCAR Truck Series race at Coronado

Running low on fuel in the closing laps of Friday's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Naval Base Coronado, Layne Riggs needed everything to go right to score the win.

It did.

After leaders Chandler Smith and Kaden Honeycutt tangled off turn 2 on the race's final restart, Riggs battled with Daniel Hemric and Tyler Reif for the lead. Reif took the lead, and for a moment, it looked as if the 19-year-old was going to score a shocking win in only his seventh series start.

But Reif overshot the chicane in the circuit's second-to-last turn, making contact with Riggs before he was forced to stop and serve a penalty. That allowed Riggs to cruise to the win, which is his series-leading fourth of 2026 and the ninth of his Truck Series career. It's also his second victory on a street course this season, as he won at St. Petersburg on Feb. 28.

"Layne van Riggsbergen came to play today, man," Riggs joked on the Fox Sports telecast. "I don't even know what happened at the end. Great job with Reif there. I faked left to scare him, and he missed the corner. It worked for me."

"This year we're just really hitting our stride. We just gotta keep pace through the season to make sure we have enough for those last few races."

Riggs now has a new career-high for wins in a season and extended his points lead over Honeycutt to 65 points with five races left in the regular season. Riggs has three victories in the last four races.

Hemric, Kaz Grala, Landen Lewis and Ty Majeski rounded out the top five, with Justin Haley, Brenden Queen, Ben Rhodes, Christian Eckes and Gio Ruggiero completing the top 10.

Notable restarts

Other notable finishers include Adam Andretti in 14th, Brendan Gaughan in 16th, Reif in 19th, Smith in 22nd and Honeycutt in 23rd.

The Truck Series will return to action at another road course, Lime Rock Park, on July 11.
