Suns re-sign Jordan Goodwin on three-year, $19 million deal

Suns get Goodwin on a great deal:

The contract is a massive win for Goodwin, who was waived last offseason by the Los Angeles Lakers and signed a training camp deal with the Suns. The 27-year-old was able to earn a minimum contract with his hard work. He responded by setting career marks in points, rebounds, steals and games played. Head coach Jordan Ott relied heavily on Goodwin throughout the season, especially with the surplus of injuries the roster faced.

Similar to Gillespie, Sunday’s signing is a win for the franchise’s development season to unlocking another level of Goodwin. Set to make an annual salary of $6.3 million, this will be Goodwin’s first deal that is not the minimum or a two-way deal.

For the Suns salary situation, it gets a little complicated. If Phoenix makes Jamaree Bouyea and Haywood Highsmith contract guarantee, it will need to fill out two roster spots and be a little over the luxury tax. However, even if the team used one spot on a low-salary second-round pick, they wouldn’t have the money to bring back center Mark Williams on a qualifying offer before reaching the first apron. Highsmith’s deal is non-guaranteed next season, waiving him and signing a minimum guy could make re-signing Williams possible, but it’ll remain difficult.
