How Saints' Tyler Shough received big help from Drew Brees this offseason

Back in February, New Orleans Saints quarterback and 2025 second-round draft pick Tyler Shough discussed what he had learned from 2026 Hall of Fame selection and franchise legend Drew Brees as a first-year pro.

It turns out Brees is continuing to serve as a mentor for Shough in more ways than one.

Why Tyler Shough won't be taking the entire summer break off

For a piece published on Monday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN detailed how Shough reached out to Brees about setting up some throwing sessions with teammates in the San Diego area during the NFL's summer break.

"Drew is kinda helping us set up our QB/wide receiver throwing retreat," Shough recently said, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "We’re getting all the guys to come down there and just work and bond together. For me, it’s just kind of continuing to study the playbook and then just put my feet and my eyes in the right position. That’s my whole focus."

Shough began his debut pro season as a backup to Spencer Rattler before head coach Kellen Moore made a change after Week 8. In total, Shough went 5-4 across nine starts en route to cementing himself as the club's 2026 Week 1 QB1. Of course, Moore and Co. are now hoping that Shough will make a big leap after being able to spend the offseason as New Orleans' undisputed starter.

Will Drew Brees give Tyler Shough some in-person tips during summer workouts?

One would think that Shough would benefit from having Brees serve as somewhat of an unofficial coach during upcoming workouts. It sounds like Brees may be willing to show Shough a thing or two.

"He might be there for a little bit, but I couldn't say for the whole time, but I think he was pivotal in setting everything up with the workout facility and the throwing location," Shough told Terrell about Brees' involvement regarding the future gathering of Saints players.

Brees' throwing arm is no longer physically what it was during his prime, but he nevertheless should have plenty to offer to Shough and others as a mentor and a sounding board before training camps start up in late July.
