The working relationship between Matthew Stafford and rookie quarterback Ty Simpson could become one of the more interesting storylines regarding the Los Angeles Rams over the next seven months or so.
Thus far, Stafford seems to be serving as an ideal mentor for the 13th overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft. On Monday, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times expanded on how Simpson spent much of the spring asking Stafford questions about being a full-time QB1 for an advertised Super Bowl contender.
"I hope I’m not annoying him," Simpson said about his interactions with Stafford, "but I really appreciate the big brother kind of role he’s playing in my development."
Stafford didn't necessarily have to take Simpson under his wing ahead of the latter's debut pro campaign. After all, Stafford signed a contract extension this past spring that realistically could keep him atop the team's depth chart through at least the 2027 campaign. Los Angeles later made a massive win-now move when the club acquired superstar pass-rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns in early June.
As of Monday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Rams as the overall betting favorites at +550 odds to win Super Bowl LXI. At that time, the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens were tied for second on the list at +1000 odds.
Stafford earned MVP honors for the 2025 regular season, and the 38-year-old seems to still have plenty left in the tank. During his comments, Simpson noted that he now better understands that Stafford is "the MVP for a reason."
"Everything he does, he’s so just aware of everything, aware of how everything works," Simpson added about Stafford. "...I really appreciate him and [fellow backup Stetson Bennett IV] taking me in and answering all the questions I have."
In an ideal situation for the Rams, Simpson won't take what would be considered a meaningful snap before the fall of 2027 at the earliest. There's been no indication that Simpson's presence annoyed Stafford during the spring, but time will tell if that will remain the case through the winter months.
