Stephanie White and the Indiana Fever finally scored a win on Monday night, snapping their two-game losing streak.
Caitlin Clark was instrumental in the win, leading the Fever with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting. The former WNBA Rookie of the Year also registered two rebounds, nine assists and three triples in 29 minutes of action.
The Fever took down the Phoenix Mercury in a feisty affair at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, 86-77.
Clark was involved in a heated incident in the fourth quarter. The 24-year-old was tagged with a technical foul for taunting following a physical altercation with Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner.
Clark’s tech on Monday night was her fifth of the season. She is now just three technical fouls away from an automatic one-game suspension. The Fever have played just 17 out of their 44 regular-season games thus far.
Coach White was asked to address Clark’s situation after the incident against the Mercury that led to the two-time All-Star’s fifth technical foul. The Fever coach took the opportunity to issue a stern reminder to her superstar.
“Yeah, I mean she’s got to be aware, certainly,” White said of Clark. “I think there are some (technical fouls) that we could do without.
“There are natural things that happen that the energy of the game creates when you do get those, but there are some that we can be a little bit more in control of.
“So yes, we’ll continue to remind her, and I think she has to have an awareness.”
As White implied in her statement, Clark will need to be careful with her behavior from here on out. The Fever need her to be on the court, and even a one-game absence due to suspension could prove costly for the team.
Now at 10-7, the Fever remain sixth in the WNBA. It’s still early in the season, but at this point, they are just 1.5 games within the playoff picture.
