Happy birthday to seven-time NBA All-Star, two-time NBA champion and Finals MVP, 1969-70 MVP and New York Knicks legend, Willis Reed!
Reed was selected with the 10th-overall pick in the 1964 NBA Draft (which was actually a second-round pick at the time) out of Grambling State. As a rookie in 1964-65, Reed averaged 19.5 points and 14.7 rebounds-per-game en route to Rookie of the Year honors. It was also the first of seven-consecutive All-Star appearances he’d make in his 10-year career with the Knicks.
In 1969-70, he swept the regular season and NBA Finals awards while leading the Knickerbockers to their first championship in franchise history. He’d win another title and Finals MVP in 1973, which would be the last Knicks championship until Jalen Brunson and Co. lifted the Larry O’Brien Trophy this season.
Injuries cut his career short and he announced his retirement after the 1973-74 campaign. He’d go on to coach in both the college and professional ranks and spent time as an executive as well before retiring again in 2007. The Class of 1982 Hall of Fame inductee passed away on March 21, 2023 at the age of 80.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Reed is one of just 12 players to be named NBA Finals MVP multiple times. How many of those players can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
