Largely out of nowhere, whispers surfaced suggesting that the Cleveland Browns had taken calls about "the availability of Shedeur Sanders" and could trade the second-year quarterback.
During the latest edition of the "Orange and Brown Talk" podcast, Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer addressed the latest Sanders-related rumors.
"I just don’t see why they would even think about doing that right now when they’re trying to determine if he can be their starting quarterback," Cabot said.
Cabot previously poured cold water over the idea that first-year Browns head coach Todd Monken has already decided that veteran Deshaun Watson will be the team's Week 1 starting quarterback. At that time, Cabot said that Watson and Sanders "will battle it out" through the summer.
Thus, it seems safe to assume that Sanders and Watson will both take snaps for the Browns during the club's preseason opener at the Chicago Bears on Aug. 15.
Additionally, it's worth noting that the Browns and other teams learned that controversial quarterback prospect Brendan Sorsby won't be made available during a summer supplemental draft. It seems unlikely that situation will change before the league would have to hold a supplemental draft on or before July 16.
"Sometimes you have conversations about other players, and in the course of those conversations, 'Hey, what do you guys think is going to happen with Shedeur? Those kinds of things happen when you’re talking to different teams," Cabot said about discussions the Browns may have had about Sanders over the past several weeks.
Additionally, Dan Labbe of the Cleveland Plain Dealer speculated that the Browns would only get "a sixth-round pick" for Sanders. That's a rather unappealing return for somebody who allegedly still has a chance to emerge as Cleveland's starting signal-caller before August comes to an end.
