Dan Campbell, Lions need to lock in star player before it's too late

The Detroit Lions are just months away from the start of a new season, and while they have some of their star players locked into longer deals, there's one player who hasn't been extended yet. It's a move they simply have to make, too, if the Lions want to have a strong offense, as they have for the past few seasons.

ESPN has published a feature on Wednesday with information on each NFL team's most important contract extensions. For the Lions, the pick is a no-brainer.

The Lions need to extend running back Jahmyr Gibbs. He's absolutely fire on the field. So, how close are they to a deal? It's complicated.

Lions need to lock in Jahmyr Gibbs sooner rather than later

"The Lions picked up the fifth-year option on Gibbs' contract in April but are also projected to sign him to a record-setting extension this offseason," Eric Woodyard of ESPN said. "Gibbs is off to a historic start to his career, earning three straight Pro Bowl honors, but he said he isn't worried about reaching an extension ahead of the season as he's letting his agent negotiate with Detroit's front office."

During OTAs, Gibbs was asked about an extension.

"I'm worried about the team. I'm just trying to hoop right now," he told reporters, according to ESPN. "I don't really pay attention to all that stuff."

But the Lions need to "pay attention to all that stuff." So long as GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell are determined to get a deal done this offseason, it'll happen.
