The Boston Celtics couldn't get their hands on Giannis Antetokounmpo, and that failed pursuit may have created another problem for them.
Now that the cat is out of the bag and Jaylen Brown knows the team offered him for Giannis, there might be no turning back.
Other teams know that he can be had at the right price, and as much as the Celtics can also keep him, someone might be willing to offer a king's ransom.
According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, multiple Western Conference teams have already reached out to Brad Stevens.
“Majority of Boston’s conversations so far (have been in) the Western Conference teams,” Charania said on ESPN's Get Up. “...Portland has been a team that has interest in Jaylen Brown."
Charania pointed to the Portland Trail Blazers as a team to keep an eye on for Brown, as they've been star-hunting and were also in the mix for Giannis and LaMelo Ball.
They have the draft capital to make the Celtics consider trading their two-way star, and he's under team control for the long run:
“Jaylen Brown has three years left on his deal. If you're the Portland Trail Blazers and you have the assets and the capability to go get a Jaylen Brown, there's not that worry that he might not extend long-term,” Charania added.
At the end of the day, the Celtics shouldn't feel compelled to trade Brown just because he already knows he was on the trade block.
That said, if a team is willing to give up multiple first-round selections for a player whose trade value may never be this high again, that's a move worth considering if you're the Celtics.
