Shortly after it was learned that the NFL would not be holding a supplemental draft this summer, multiple reporters and analysts suggested that controversial quarterback Brendan Sorsby could "potentially" play in the Canadian Football League this year.
On Friday, Paul Myerberg of USA Today shared the CFL's feelings regarding Sorsby's eligibility for its ongoing season.
"Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL," the league said in a statement. "The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning. At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list."
The CFL statement was referencing how Sorsby placed bets on Indiana football games when he was a member of that program. The NCAA deemed him ineligible to play during the upcoming college football season, and it's looking more and more like he either won't be able to or won't try to force the NFL into holding a supplemental draft.
Had the NFL made Sorsby available to teams via a supplemental draft, that player-selection process would have taken place on or before July 16.
For what it's worth, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio previously wrote that Sorsby would have had "an uphill climb to get on the field in 2026" with a CFL team because the league's season started on June 4. On Friday, Florio pointed out that "Sorsby has shown no inclination to play in the CFL."
"His primary options seem to be: (1) challenging the NFL’s decision as to the supplemental draft in court; and (2) accepting that he won’t be able to be drafted by an NFL team until April 2027," Florio added about Sorsby. "The fact that no lawsuit has been filed since the NFL announced its decision on Tuesday strongly suggests that no lawsuit will be filed."
Myerberg noted that Sorsby could explore playing at the junior college level, which is what current New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Hunter Dekkers did after he was suspended indefinitely for gambling while at Iowa State. It's unknown if Sorsby has any interest in following in Dekkers' footsteps.
