Lakers reportedly targeting top Knicks free agent

The New York Knicks are surely still basking in the glow of being NBA champions for the first time since 1973. They deserve to take the time to savor this victory. The players on this team weren't even born the last time the Knicks won a championship, and that says something.

The Knicks pulled off a staggering win in Game 5 on June 13 over the San Antonio Spurs to secure the title. So, it's been nearly two weeks since that moment, and while the celebration continues, it's also time to start working ahead and planning for the future.

Now, a report that broke on Thursday indicates that the Los Angeles Lakers are looking to lock in one of the Knicks' most notable free agents. They want to do it fast, too.

Report: Lakers are looking to sign a top Knicks free agent

According to Collin Loring at Knicks X Factor, the Lakers are going hard for Mitchell Robinson, who's now an unrestricted free agent.

"Sources tell Knicks X-Factor that the Los Angeles Lakers loom large in Robinson's fast-approaching free agency," Loring said.

"It's the Lakers," a source told the outlet regarding Robinson. "They're going to offer more than (Knicks owner James) Dolan is willing to pay, and the starting job."

The report also indicated that the Lakers are willing to give a "full non-taxpayer mid-level exception" for Robinson worth around $15 million annually.

A lot of teams are going to be interested in Robinson. Few will have as deep a pocket as Los Angeles. If the Lakers want him, he'll likely be on a plane to L.A. before too long.
