Maple Leafs extend qualifying offers to five players, let two RFAs walk

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced an official roster move that will impact the team heading into next season.

The Maple Leafs have extended qualifying offers to defensemen Emil Andrae and William Villeneuve, as well as forwards Jacob Quillan, Nicholas Robertson and Ryan Tverberg.

Forward Matias Maccelli and defenseman Henry Thrun were also restricted free agents, but neither received a qualifying offer and will therefore become unrestricted free agents when free agency opens.

That means Toronto will retain certain rights to the players who received qualifying offers. If another team attempts to sign them with an offer sheet, the Leafs will have the opportunity to match it.

The situation is different for Maccelli and Thrun. Since they did not receive qualifying offers, they will be free to sign with any team beginning at noon ET on July 1.

This is the latest in a series of roster moves made by the Maple Leafs since John Chayka took over as the club’s new general manager.

Earlier this month, Toronto also acquired Darren Raddysh in a sign-and-trade deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In addition, at the 2026 NHL Draft, the Maple Leafs selected 18-year-old forward Gavin McKenna, widely regarded as the top hockey prospect in the world, to join stars such as Auston Matthews next season.
