Yankees offense has taken a detour with fifth consecutive loss

For the first time in franchise history, the New York Yankees have recorded three or fewer hits in four consecutive games. The Detroit Tigers handed the Yankees their fifth consecutive loss with a 7-3 victory on Monday night following a four-game sweep from the Boston Red Sox.

Tigers starter Casey Mize threw seven scoreless innings against the Yankees, tying his career-high in strikeouts with 10. It was also a rough night defensively for left-fielder Cody Bellinger.

The 30-year-old misplayed a high-fly ball from Dillon Dingler that provided the Tigers with two runners on base and nobody out for rookie phenom Kevin McGonigle, who hit a two-run single and provided a 6-0 lead over the Yankees.

The Bronx Bombers' power has recently dissipated, and even their hottest hitter, Ben Rice, has been ice cold at the plate, batting .074 with seven strikeouts and two hits across his last seven games.

Yankees' rough patch points to recent offensive struggles

The Yankees are hitting a dreadful .098 (12/123) across their last 4 games. It is also the worst batting average they have compiled across any four-game span in Yankees history. They are also the first team in AL history to bat under .100 and strike out at least 35 times across four games. Their 38 strikeouts and eight walks in their rough four-game stretch have not been a pretty sight for Yankees fans.

Monday night's loss for the Yankees is one they will want to forget, as they were held to only three hits, but it also included a collision between Jasson Domínguez and Jazz Chisholm Jr. The two collided while attempting to make a play, and it caused Chisholm Jr. to exit the game.

While he's not diagnosed with a concussion, Chisholm Jr. is still being cautious and abiding by concussion protocol, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. It hasn't been a pretty sight for Chisholm Jr., who was also ejected in the Yankees' 5-4 loss against the Red Sox on Sunday night.

In addition, the absence of both Aaron Judge and Trent Grishman is certainly starting to weigh in. While Grishman is expected to make his return to the Yankees lineup this week, Judge has been on the IL since early June with a rib injury, with no official timetable for return. When the Yankees had Judge in the lineup, they held a 36-23 record this season. But ever since he's been on the IL, they own a 12-13 record, which showcases how big a role Judge plays with the Yankees' offense and success.
