With the Toronto Blue Jays having their primary leadoff hitter, George Springer, on the paternity list, this has allowed them to shake up their lineup. They placed right fielder Nathan Lukes in the leadoff spot, which they did against the Seattle Mariners on Friday night.
But even when Springer returns to the lineup, the Blue Jays would massively benefit from having Lukes remain as their go-to leadoff man. Lukes has settled back into a consistent offensive rhythm following his early season struggles that were plagued by health issues with vertigo.
His post-vertigo performance has resembled his return to form from his successful tenure with the Blue Jays in 2025, where he compiled a .255 batting average with 99 hits, 12 home runs, 65 RBI and 55 runs scored across 135 games in the regular season.
Amid his battle with vertigo, he has hovered a batting average around the .300 mark, showcasing his ability to hit for a high average while also being a reliable on-base threat (.341 OBP).
"There's no doubt [Nathan Lukes] has been one of our better hitters, so we'll figure it out."

Evidently, Lukes has emerged as a quintessential table-setter when matched up against right-handed pitchers, which is another key factor that makes him a compelling leadoff hitter. He's proved to be efficient, slashing .343/.381/.489 against right-handers.
Manager John Schneider joined Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker on Sportsnet's 590 The Fan to talk about whether Springer will remain in the leadoff spot when he returns to the lineup.
"There's no doubt [Nathan Lukes] has been one of our better hitters, so we'll figure it out," said Schneider.
His track record has also validated his leadoff success, where he boasted a .435/.458/.609 slash line across 13 games as a leadoff hitter. When taking into account that the Blue Jays offense has been streaky this season, where we've witnessed them struggle with RISP, the outcome has forced Schneider to utilize his hottest bat.
Lukes has also illustrated how he can spark the offense, making him a worthy candidate to take over the leadoff role. In 2024, when Springer was going through offensive struggles, he was moved out of the leadoff spot, and it paid off.
As the old saying goes, history often repeats itself. If moving Springer out of the leadoff spot is what the Blue Jays need to do to fortify the offense and go on a run, then by all means, Schneider shouldn't even hesitate to make a change at the top of the batting order.
