Following the month of May, Detroit Tigers veteran starter Jack Flaherty has gained momentum following a 5.81 ERA and 1.613 WHIP before June.
Since then he has improved to a 1.90 ERA and a 1.098 WHIP and has been pitching like the dominant ace he was in 2024, when he held an 18-7 record with a 3.17 ERA.
The 30-year-old worked on his mechanics while he was on the 15-day injury list with a left peroneal strain. Prior to landing on the IL, he had a 5.35 ERA and a 1-8 record. But his performance has evidently improved since his return from the IL. He's now 2-8 on the season, lowering his ERA from 4.97 to 4.60.
On Saturday July 4, Flaherty was the winner as the Tigers blanked the Texas Rangers, 3-0. He was impressive, pitching 5 2/3 innings and giving up only three hits with no runs, five strikeouts and no walks.
Despite the Tigers' bullpen woes, Kaider Montero has been a more reliable arm and he helped Flaherty shut down the Rangers.
I’ll say it.

Flaherty would have a better record this season, but the Tigers bullpen unfortunately has cost Flaherty multiple wins along with no decisions this season. For example, on June 28, Flaherty left the game with a 3-0 lead but the bullpen ultimately gave up four runs in the 10th to spoil his chance at a victory.
Unfortunately, the bullpen has been a significant weakness this season, showcasing an inability to hold leads late in games. But despite that, in his last five starts, Flaherty has recorded a 1.90 ERA with 28 strikeouts, seven walks and a 1.76 FIP. He is looking to get back on track for the Tigers with his improved 26.7% strikeout rate that ranks in the 77th percentile.
Flaherty's resurgence has become a huge bright spot for the Tigers, compared to his first seven starts where he held a 5.90 ERA and 17.7% walk rate, as well as a 22.7% strikeout rate. His strong June performance (2.50 ERA, compared to 6.26 in May) showcased a dominant slider that produced a 31.4% whiff rate.
Since the start of June, Flaherty also has recorded 28 strikeouts and only five earned runs in 23.2 innings. In his last 10 starts he has a 3.80 ERA with a 5.8 percent walk rate and a 29.1 percent strikeout rate. If he can continue to pitch at least five reliable innings and possibly stretch to six, he can pick up more victories.

47 1/3 IP, 12 BB, 60 K, 3.80 ERA.
Won't be able to crunch the numbers until tomorrow, but he's almost certainly going to be top-5 among AL starters in K/9, K%, K-BB and FIP over that span. Likely top-10 in fWAR.
His trade buzz has heated up and taking into account his playoff experience, the right-handed starter would be worthy of consideration. He wouldn't be nearly as pricey, so teams might take a chance on a low- risk, high-reward signing.
He has averaged only 4.4 innings per start this season, less than his career average of 5.3 innings per start. He has pitched six innings twice this season, showcasing that he has the ability to stretch out to more innings, increasing his trade value.
His recent performance has demonstrated his trade value to contenders ahead of the trade deadline. While there have been lingering trade talks about Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, Flaherty is a good trade candidate who has made significant strides with the Tigers this season as he bounces back from his poor start.
