Padres stuck between rock and hard place as trade deadline approaches

The 2026 season is quickly slipping away from the San Diego Padres.

The Padres entered Sunday with a 43-45 record, having lost eight consecutive games. Not only have the Padres fallen out of contention for the NL West title, but they have also dropped out of a playoff spot entirely and are five games out of the final wild-card spot.

The Padres' losing streak brings their plans ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline into question. They had been expected to be buyers ahead of the deadline, potentially looking to shore up their rotation and improve the lineup.

Selling at trade deadline could benefit San Diego Padres in long term

Meanwhile, the Padres may not have the assets needed to bring in those upgrades. They were regarded as having the worst farm system in the majors heading into the 2026 season, per MLB.com, after several trades hollowed out their minor league talent.

Instead, the 2026 season could be a bit of a reset. The Padres have several intriguing pieces should they decide to sell. Relievers Adrian Morejan and Yuki Matsui could help a contending team looking to shore up the bullpen. Closer Mason Miller could headline another blockbuster if the Padres look to rebuild instead of retooling the roster at the deadline.

The Padres may look to be sellers and buyers at the deadline. Relievers such as Morejan and Matsui will be free agents at the end of the season and would not have much value to a team which fallen out of contention. Likewise, adding a longer-term piece, such as outfielder Jarren Duran, could make sense as the Padres look ahead to 2027.
