Ty Simpson compares learning Sean McVay's offense to 'drinking from a fire hydrant'

There is no easing into Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay's offense. Just ask rookie quarterback Ty Simpson, who has been learning McVay's offensive scheme at a breakneck pace.

As Simpson begins to prepare or the Rams training camp, he was not shy about admitting that it has been a difficult process. The learning curve for McVay's offense has been steep, but Simpson is ready to embrace it as he embarks on his rookie season.

"Like drinking from a fire hydrant"

As detailed by ESPN Rams reporter Sarah Barshop, Simpson did not shy away from describing just how demanding McVay's system has been during organized team activities. The rookie quarterback admitted there have been moments where the amount of information coming at him has felt overwhelming, but he also made it clear that embracing those expectations is exactly what he signed up for.

"[It's like] drinking from a fire hydrant," Simpson said of learning the offense during OTAs. "You're expected [to do] a lot. The quarterback runs the show here, just how I like it. But it's just making sure that you're disciplined and you're detail-oriented."

While the phrase "drinking from a fire hydrant" may worry some fans, it is exactly what they should want to hear. At no point did he ever try to make it seem like the transition to McVay's offense would be simple. Instead, he focused on the challenge that has been presented before him including what McVay expects from his quarterbacks.

Learning the playbook is only part of the job. Processing information quickly, communicating with teammates and making the right decisions before the snap are what separate quarterbacks who stick around from those who do not. Simpson appears to recognize that, and admitting the learning curve exists is far more encouraging than acting as though there isn't one.

Ty Simpson values his time with Matthew Stafford

Simpson also emphasized he is not trying to rush his development. Rather, he is taking cues from the quarterbacks already in the room, including one of the most decorated veterans in the league. Instead of looking at Matthew Stafford as a threat, the rookie QB viewed his time as an asset throughout the offseason.

"I mean, he's the MVP for a reason," Simpson said. "Everything he does, he's so just aware of everything. Aware of how everything works [and is] so detailed. Being in the room with him is just such a blessing. I really appreciate him and Stetson taking me in and answering all the questions I have. I know I'm probably annoying them, but it's been really helpful. I can't thank them enough.

Upon being drafted by the Rams, there were many assumptions the selection of Simpson would spark a rivalry or cause tension with Stafford. Stafford seems more than willing to mentor Simpson, and the latter seems to humble enough to embrace the information that can be learned from a quarterback who has been through every possible NFL scenario.

It's a win-win situation as Stafford can continue to focus on winning, and Simpson can get an education that can't be matched in a conference room or on the practice field alone.

Ty Simpson is taking the right approach in Los Angeles

Simpson has been vocal about how tough of an adjustment it’s been, and that could actually be the best indication of progress. If Simpson can be honest about his struggles, and willing to learn with Stafford by his side, the Rams might just find what they are looking for. Simpson appears to have embraced the process, giving the Rams every reason for optimism.
