Pirates acquire Konnor Griffin injury replacement in trade with White Sox

The Pittsburgh Pirates attempted to fill two problem spots with their roster on Friday night in a trade with the Chicago White Sox.

The Pirates sent the No. 34 overall pick (a competitive balance pick, which is eligible to be traded) and minor league pitcher Jaden Woods to the White Sox in exchange for infielder Jacob Gonzalez and relief pitcher Brandon Eisert.

Pirates get bullpen arm and infield help after Konnor Griffin injury

Injuries to some key position players (specifically shortstop Konnor Griffin, center fielder Oneil Cruz and first baseman Spencer Horwitz), as well as a consistently ineffective bullpen for most of the season, have held back an offense that has been one of the best in baseball.

They finally attempted to address some of that on Friday with the trade for Gonzalez and Eisert.

While bullpen help has been by far the most pressing issue all season, this trade seems to focus more on replacing Griffin during his absence.

Griffin is expected to miss several weeks due to a finger injury, leaving utility man Jared Triolo as the starter at the position. It has not gone well.

Gonzalez figures to get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop until Griffin returns, and he does have some potential upside if he gets an extended look. He mashed the ball in Triple-A this season (1.088 OPS) and has held his own in his first look at Major League pitching. He is still only 24 years old and could at least be a utility player and provide some much-needed infield depth.

While Eisert is a relief pitcher, he does not really provide any of the help the Pirates need. He has been mostly ineffective this season and does nothing to solve their need for a high-leverage, right-handed pitcher that can get right-handed hitters out. He has a 5.93 ERA for the season and a 4.77 ERA in his career over 100 appearances.

Gonzalez has a chance to make an impact and potentially show what he can do with regular at-bats, but it's still a little staggering that the Pirates' focus here is on infield depth, given how much the bullpen has sabotaged the season.

The White Sox, meanwhile, get another top-35 pick in the draft. They also own the No. 1 overall pick in the draft on Saturday. Having two top-35 picks in a year where you are competing for a playoff spot is probably the best position the White Sox have found themselves in in quite some time.
