It's that nerve-wracking time in the NFL offseason where hopes are high but without anything really tangible yet. The Dallas Cowboys and owner and general manager Jerry Jones have made quite a few changes during the NFL offseason, and now, it's almost time to see if those changes take this franchise to a new level.
Jones isn't known for earth-shattering decisions, but he made some, such as putting a $27.3 million franchise tag on star wideout George Pickens and trading for Green Bay Packers edge rusher Rashan Gary.
So, were they the right moves? Maybe. But, one signing may turn out to be a total bust.
On Friday, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report unveiled his tally of NFL players that could be a total bust this season. The tally "includes players who have signed new deals, are in battles for roster spots or face competition for snaps at their respective positions."
One of them is Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson. This one might come back to haunt them. In the piece, he writes that Thompson's three-year, $33 million contract is "a bit rich for a safety with minimal ball production and subpar coverage metrics over the last two seasons."
"Thompson hasn't recorded an interception since the 2023 campaign," he adds. "Though he's registered nine pass breakups in that time frame, the seven-year veteran also allowed passer ratings above 102. Thompson logged seven of his nine career interceptions in two seasons (2021 and 2023). He lacks playmaking consistency and could be a free-agent disappointment."
So, will Jones and the Cowboys regret this decision? There's a good chance Thompson will actually turn out to be a handy player next season. But, it's worth noting that they didn't exactly get a deal on him.
