Cowboys have a breakout candidate ready for a big leap

Don't look now, but the Dallas Cowboys and owner and general manager Jerry Jones have a breakout candidate on their hands, and he's not even a rookie.

Usually, during this time of year, the new draft picks get all the attention. It's the curiosity of the unknown. How will these guys perform under the spotlight? Did the team draft the right players? Are they going to buckle under the pressure of the NFL?

But not all of the breakout stars are newbies. There's one Cowboys player who's getting a lot of attention heading into his third season in the league, and it's the good kind of attention.

Cowboys' 2023 NFL Draft pick gets props ahead of the 2026 season

Ben Solak of ESPN has a ranking out naming one breakout candidate for each NFL team before the 2026 season. For the Cowboys, he digs linebacker DeMarvion Overshown. Of course, Overshown isn't a new name. He's anything but. However, this could be a breakout year for the player.

"This is less of a breakout and more of a re-breakout," Solak says in the feature. 

That's because Overshown didn't have a rookie year in 2023 due to a torn ACL. Then, he tore an ACL, MCL and PCL in 2024. So, it's been a difficult few years for the player. But this could be his year. 

"As he gets further away from the injury, he'll hopefully recover the top speed that allowed him to play sideline to sideline and trigger quickly on those behind-the-line opportunities," Solak notes.

For anyone who's followed Overshown's up-and-down time in the NFL, 2026 really does feel different. It's time for him to show the Cowboys that he was worth their 2023 draft pick.
