If NBA Summer League is any indication, the upcoming 2026-27 Rookie of the Year race is going to be one for the ages.
On Monday, Chicago Bulls forward Caleb Wilson followed a dominant effort in his Summer League debut with another stellar performance in a 80-63 loss to the Utah Jazz, who sat No. 2 overall pick Darryn Peterson following a similarly spectacular start.
Wilson, selected fourth, scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc, while filling the box score with eight rebounds (three offensive), two assists, two steals and five blocks.
The former North Carolina Tar Heels forward has shown no rust in his first action since Feb. 10, when he fractured his left hand. A broken right thumb suffered in practice later ended his freshman season after 24 games.
During the fourth quarter, Wilson had arguably the highlight of summer league so far, dribbling past his defender on the perimeter with his left hand then switching to his right to throw down a slam dunk over Jazz center Jonas Aidoo.

The hyped 2026 draft class has delivered so far. In addition to Wilson and Peterson, who averaged 25 points on 43.1 percent shooting in four games, No. 1 overall pick A.J. Dybantsa and No. 3 overall Cameron Boozer have also been outstanding, raising expectations for the regular season.
Dybantsa scored 27 points in his debut for the Washington Wizards, followed by a 23-point performance on Sunday in a win over the Sacramento Kings. Boozer has shot an efficient 55.1 percent in four games, averaging 19.3 points per game for the Memphis Grizzlies.
But among the top prospects, Wilson's dunk is arguably the biggest highlight. It certainly was a statement to the rest of the class. Wilson will be in any conversation about the 2026-27 season's best rookies. He may even finish the year on top.
