For most of the offseason, the New England Patriots and star CB Christian Gonzalez have engaged in a staring contest.
Most projections had the young star resetting the cornerback market, with the Seattle Seahawks' Devon Witherspoon one-upping him shortly after. However, none of them has gotten a new deal yet. And while it seemed that they were just waiting for one another to get a new deal, it looks like Gonzalez's situation might be a little more complicated.
According to NBC Sports Boston insider Greg Bedard, the Patriots may still not be entirely sold on Gonzalez.
“I don’t know how many questions the team has about him today, but he hasn’t gotten his contract. And that’s he’s a little sensitive about somebody being critical of him? A little bit? I would say maybe it’s not a great sign,” Bedard argued (h/t Savage Sports).
When asked about potential knocks on his game, Bedard questioned Gonzalez's physicality, citing that as a potential reason why he hasn't gotten a new deal yet.
“I would say that there’s a little bit of sensitivity,” added Bedard. “This was a knock on him coming out, the mental toughness… I would say there’s still a ways to go with the contract.”

At the end of the day, the Patriots can afford to wait before putting pen to paper. He's just about to enter his fourth season, so he's still under contract, even without an extension. That said, they're also taking a big risk by not getting a deal done now.
Not only are they risking their relationship with one of their building blocks, but his price will only go up once Witherspoon and any other star reset the market at the position.
