Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark keeps generating headlines, but many aren't basketball-related.
A group of 11 lawmakers recently sent an angry letter to the WNBA over "multiple attacks" on Clark over her first three seasons in the league. Then, on Wednesday, Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar slammed these legislators for the note and claimed Clark isn't the face of the league.
Clark, of course, didn't ask for this. She has reiterated throughout her first three seasons that she just wants to play basketball. But all of these stories are preventing her from focusing on and enjoying the sport. That's beginning to show on the court, where she's been struggling to shoot from three.
On Thursday morning, Yahoo Sports shared that Clark has shot 3-of-19 (15.8 percent, well below the league average) in July. This includes a dreadful performance in an 88-75 home loss to the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday night, in which she went 1-of-8 (12.5 percent) from three-point range. Her season average from three is 32 percent (No. 36 among 43 eligible WNBA players).

Now, shooting slumps are normal over the course of a 44-game season. In Clark's case, however, this feels like something a little more than a few off-nights from three.
"I think it's sapped some of the joy for her. I don't think she ever wanted any of this," The Ringer's Bill Simmons recently said of the off-court drama that has surrounded Clark. "I think she just wants to play basketball and shoot threes. She just seems miserable."
The constant attention and scrutiny that come with being the league's most well-known player may be making her feel this way and causing her to lose her love for basketball. Forgetting why she enjoys the game may be sapping her three-point shooting, which has been her signature throughout most of her pro and college career.
