Running back James Cook III is among the Buffalo Bills players who have recently made it known they expect the team to compete for at least a Super Bowl berth after the franchise parted ways with head coach Sean McDermott and promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to serve as McDermott's replacement.
During a Thursday appearance on NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" program, Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins sent a warning to the rest of the league regarding what Buffalo could achieve from September through February 2027.
"It honestly feels like, if you're watching a movie, you're getting to the climax of a movie, right? The movie starts off one way, and then all of a sudden, something happens, a drastic thing happens where the castle kinda gets a little shaky," Dawkins explained, per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "Now we've got a new guy that's holding that torch, and we all just have to say, 'Ahoo, ahoo,' just like the 300 soldiers, right?"
While McDermott guided the Bills to eight playoff trips during his nine seasons in charge, he failed to lead a team that featured MVP quarterback Josh Allen to a single Super Bowl appearance from Allen's first season in 2018 through this past January. Allen committed four turnovers in Buffalo's most recent playoff defeat, a divisional-round loss to the Denver Broncos, but team ownership clearly felt that a coaching change was needed after that contest.
Fair or not, it's assumed that Brady is currently Buffalo's head coach because Allen wanted to continue playing under the man who was the signal-caller's coordinator when Allen earned MVP Award honors for the 2024 regular season. Nevertheless, Dawkins insisted on Thursday that he doesn't have any extra expectations of Allen for the upcoming campaign.
"I don't add any more extra pressure to that kid that he already has," Dawkins continued. "Josh understands what he's doing, what he's not doing. He understands what the mindset is and what we all expect, just like we know what Josh expects from us, as well, to help him get there. When it comes down to it, Josh is Josh, and he's gonna be Josh. He's No. 1 for a reason, so I don't think that we need any more expectations than we already have. It seems like we need all the pieces around him to continue to get better to help him get over that hump. Because if Josh is No. 1, he's at his best, right?"
Dawkins added that he and the Bills "are not playing around with nobody" heading into the 2026 season. As of Thursday afternoon, the Bills and Baltimore Ravens were tied for second among the betting favorites at +1000 odds to win Super Bowl LXI, per DraftKings. The Los Angeles Rams topped the list at +550 odds.
