This isn't the first season that LeBron James has paralyzed the NBA offseason by taking his time to choose a team in free agency. It is the first time the commissioner has weighed in.
At the Game Plan Summit Thursday in New York City, NBA commissioner Adam Silver revealed that the league was delaying their schedule-making process until James knows his destination, and added, "I need him to make a decision."
James is about to play his 24th season and remains one of the league's most popular players. He's played in the NBA's showcase game on Christmas game a record 20 times, playing on Dec. 25 for the last 19 seasons in a row. It's hard to imagine that James' new team won't be playing on Christmas as well.
According to Silver, the league office is getting calls from teams and networks curious about planning for the upcoming season, since James will inevitably be playing on holidays and in a featured game during the opening week.
He told the Game Plan audience, "I would like him to make his announcement already, so we can finish the schedule. Because as you might imagine, the teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to lock in the schedule."

Networks may be antsy to learn about the upcoming schedule, though we are still a month away from when last year's schedule came out, on Aug. 14. There are a few teams and players left in limbo by James, namely James Harden with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Draymond Green with the Golden State Warriors, but most other free agents have already signed.
What could create true chaos is the NBA's long-delayed decision on their investigation of Kawhi Leonard's endorsement deals and possible salary cap circumvention by the Los Angeles Clippers. Not only has there been no resolution on a story that broke 10 months ago, but a blockbuster trade between the Clippers and the Toronto Raptors is now on hold pending the NBA's decision.
James might be delaying the TV schedule for a few days, but Silver's foot-dragging on the Clippers investigation has made two franchises and multiple players uncertain as to their futures, even players unrelated to the Leonard trade like new Clippers signee Rui Hachimura.
King James will decide soon and the schedule will come out in mid-August as usual. As for Silver, perhaps he should stop worrying about James taking an extra week to pick a team and worry more about his own office's ability to render a decision on the Clippers within a year.
