For the second day in a row, pockets of basketball fans and others flocked to the Fanatics Fest event held in New York City on Friday to see if free-agent superstar LeBron James would confirm where he will (likely) end his NBA playing career.
For the second day in a row, James disappointed such individuals.
"We don't have an announcement to make just yet," James confirmed on Friday, as shared by Kalan Hooks of ESPN and other outlets. Per Anthony Rivardo of Empire Sports Media, James insisted that he will publicly confirm his intentions for the 2026-27 season "soon."
All that's known for sure, as of Friday afternoon, is that James won't be returning to the Los Angeles Lakers for another campaign. Many have assumed that a Cleveland Cavaliers team that was swept by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks in this year's Eastern Conference Finals is the favorite to win the James sweepstakes. James has already completed two stints with Cleveland, and the Akron native remains popular in the area. Additionally, he potentially could help the Cavs claim a second NBA title in a decade (2016 with James).
However, the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers are among other teams that have been linked with James over the past few weeks. On Friday, James either intentionally or unintentionally teased one fan base about his future.
As shared by ESPN's Dave McMenamin and others, James repeatedly mentioned teams that "trust the process" during his comments. Those three words have been associated with the Philadelphia 76ers for years, but James insisted his use of the phrase wasn't any kind of hint about where he will sign.
Whether or not that is truly the case shall be seen.
On Thursday, NBA insider/reporter Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints speculated that James won't make an official announcement until "next week, once the World Cup ends." The World Cup final between Spain and Argentina is scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon in New Jersey, and it appears that concerns related to ongoing air quality warnings in the area will not cause that game to be pushed back or postponed.
