Could Yankees trade for Rockies power-hitting catcher Hunter Goodman?

According to ESPN baseball reporter Jorge Castillo, the New York Yankees have contacted the Colorado Rockies regarding power-hitting catcher Hunter Goodman.

Though Castillo added that the communication wasn't recent, adding Goodman would significantly boost the Yankees' catcher situation as he is a two-time All-Star who remains under team control through 2029. The 26-year-old is batting .254 with 27 home runs, 51 RBI and an .862 OPS this season for the Rockies.

He also owns a barrel rate of 16.6% that ranks in the 96th percentile and a bat speed of 75.3 mph that sits in the 88th percentile.

The Yankees' catching trio of Austin Wells, Ali Sanchez, and J.C. Escarra has been a significant weak point offensively this season, as they rank last in MLB with a .521 OPS  and 46 wRC+. This has urged them to make an upgrade at the position ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline.

Why Hunter Goodman is an alluring option for the Yankees

Goodman is one of the top power-hitting catchers in MLB, and he would provide the Yankees with elite power and would fit in well as a ''Bronx Bomber.''

His power-hitting dominance would mesh well with a contending team versus remaining with a franchise that has struggled for the past eight years and currently sits in last place in the NL West. Goodman also doesn't become a free agent until after the 2029 season, which would make him a long-term option instead of a short-term rental.

Goodman has also shown road dominance this season, hitting 18 of his 27 home runs away from Coors Field this season, raising the appeal factor.

But acquiring Goodman won't be an easy task as the Rockies plan to hold onto him as he provides them with a bright future for their organization. However, if the Yankees manage to snag him away from the Rockies, they would likely have to trade a hefty package of top-tier pitching prospects.
