Patriots QB Drake Maye expands on play in Super Bowl loss to Seahawks

Earlier this spring, New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye admitted that it was a "humbling" experience to suffer a 29-13 Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks this past February. 

As Mike Reiss of ESPN shared on Sunday, Maye recently expanded on what he did and didn't do during that defeat.

"I wish we would have won it," Maye said at his FlexWork Sports camp in Auburn, Massachusetts. "I have to play better. You give your best, sometimes things don't go your way, and that's why you have to get back to work. I think that's the best thing about life -- there are times when you don't get what you worked for, but you get back to work, have to have the right mindset, and know it's not always going to be easy."

The third overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye guided the 2025 Patriots to a division title and a record of 14-3. He eventually finished second in 2025 MVP voting behind Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, but Maye then endured a rough night against Seattle. 

In the Super Bowl loss, Seattle sacked Maye six times and forced him into committing three turnovers (one fumble, two interceptions). His last giveaway resulted in the Seahawks scoring a game-icing defensive touchdown.

"We're back. We're back to getting into football phase," Maye said about his mindset. "I think just the hunger -- of wanting to get back [to the Super Bowl]. Felt like you were close but not there yet. It's time to go back to work."

As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Patriots and two other teams tied for fifth among the betting favorites at +1600 odds to win Super Bowl LXI. Veteran Patriots players are due to report for training camp July 24.

"The best thing about training camp is being around the guys; it is one of the best times for bonding," Maye added. "We spend a lot of time together. I think to get used to some new pieces; [I'm] looking forward to getting back to it."

One of those new pieces is wide receiver A.J. Brown, who has already developed some chemistry with Maye after the Patriots acquired Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles in early June.
