Update hints that Texans have made big C.J. Stroud decision

Questions about the future of Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud will hover over the franchise long after veteran Houston players report for training camp on July 28. 

For an article published on Monday, Mike Jones of The Athletic suggested that those running the Texans have already made a significant call regarding what they won't do before the 2026 season gets underway.

C.J. Stroud not receiving a contract extension this summer? 

"The Texans made Stroud the second pick of the 2023 draft, and he has helped his team reach the playoffs in each of the last three seasons," Jones wrote. "However, he has yet to help them get over the hump, and pressure continues to mount. Last season, the Texans had a championship-caliber defense, but Stroud’s postseason struggles cost the team a chance to advance to the AFC Championship Game, and possibly the Super Bowl. While Houston did pick up Stroud’s fifth-year option (for 2027) this spring, the lack of playoff success has given the Texans pause in awarding the quarterback a long-term contract extension."

Jones' final line isn't all that shocking, as there has been no indication since the spring that the Texans and Stroud have come close to putting pen to paper on any type of extension after he threw five interceptions and lost two of five fumbles over his most recent two playoff starts. For a different update shared last week, it was revealed that somebody associated with a different team is glad that making a final call about a possible Stroud deal isn't that club's "problem." 

Of course, Stroud could silence such chatter and ultimately earn a massive deal if he plays well through the 2026 regular season and then notches multiple playoff wins in January (and maybe one in February). If he doesn't, however, the Texans may look elsewhere for a full-time QB1 before or during the 2027 NFL Draft. 

Texans "taking a wait-and-see approach" about C.J. Stroud

"They’re taking a wait-and-see approach," Jones added about Houston's handling of Stroud's contract. "The Texans need to see more from him this season before committing to him for the long term and making him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. If Stroud can finally take his team on a deep postseason run, he could quiet all of the doubts about his future."

The numbers Stroud produces during "a deep postseason run" would impact whether or not he is offered a lucrative contract extension before the 2027 campaign gets underway. That said, it sounds like the Texans plan to keep him in a "prove it" situation until further notice.
