Rangers hire Jonathan Quick as director of goaltending development

Quick had a prolific career in the NHL. He backstopped the Los Angeles Kings’ most recent stretch of greatness, including eight trips to the postseason and two Stanley Cup wins between 2009 and 2022. On a roster that featured Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty, it was Quick who often caught headlines. He ranks third in goals-against average (2.36), fourth in games played (525) and fifth in shutouts (44) among all goaltenders between 2010 and 2020. He performed even better when the pressure was on — with the second-most shutouts (9) and fifth-most wins (44) in the postseason.

Quick never took home the Vezina Trophy, though he did finish in the top-three in 2012 and 2016. The former stands out as Quick’s career-year, marked by a 35-21-13 record, .929 save percentage, 1.95 goals-against average and league-leading 10 shutouts. Quick’s hot hand in net helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup win. He finished the year second in Vezina voting behind his new coworker and Rangers great, Henrik Lundqvist. Quick also finished fifth in Hart Trophy voting that year.

Quick’s career ended with the 12th-most wins (410), 15th-most games played (829), and 17th-most shutouts (65) in NHL history. He has a strong case to earn induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame one day — and will bide his time waiting on ballots by overseeing the goalie room he recently left. The Rangers have starter Igor Shesterkin locked down for the long-term — but face an interesting competition for the backup role between veteran Joonas Korpisalo and promising prospect Dylan Garand. Quick’s presence could help Garand grow into the role that he vacated, while Korpisalo bridges the gap.
