Bo Bichette shares major regret about Mets tenure as trade deadline approaches

While recent reports have hinted that the New York Mets will not acquire a younger prospect or two for infielder Bo Bichette before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline arrives, the harsh truth of the matter is that a Mets team that entered Wednesday with a record of 43-59 should be willing to have conversations about a majority of players on the roster. 

During a Tuesday chat with Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News, Bichette suggested that he has one regret about all that has gone wrong for the Mets over the past handful of months.

"Every season has its own story," Bichette said. "Unfortunately, for me and for the team, if I had played better early on, maybe it’d be a different situation. But that’s in the past, so I’m just kind of letting all that go and trying to be the best version of myself now."

Bichette signed a three-year, $126M deal that included opt-outs after the first and second years to join the Mets this past offseason, and he then got off to a slow start to the campaign. However, the Baseball Reference website shows that the 28-year-old slashed .325/.358/.497 with an .854 OPS, five home runs and 23 RBI over 39 games from June 3 through July 20. 

According to Mastracco, "it doesn’t seem as though [Bichette] wants to be dealt" ahead of the trade deadline. That said, it's also unknown if he will opt out of his deal after the season.

Bo Bichette wasn't fully "prepared" to make the transition to the Big Apple

Bichette featured for the Toronto Blue Jays from the 2019 MLB season up until he joined the Mets. No disrespect meant to the Canadian side, but playing home games in Toronto is quite different than being with one of the two clubs that exist in the largest sports market in all of North America. 

"It’s easier to handle things when you’re prepared for them, and I think that there’s just a lot of things that I wasn’t prepared for," Bichette added about making the move to the Mets. "Just getting used to new coaches, new training staff. The teammates are a little different; that’s similar, I think. But yeah, dealing with everybody and creating new relationships and all that."

It remains to be seen if Bichette's working relationships with Mets players will continue through at least late September.
