Alex Bregman is slowly turning into exactly who Cubs paid him to be

Three weeks ago, Chicago Cubs prized free-agent signing Alex Bregman was struggling, and we dove into why the Cubs needed so much more production from the man they signed for $175 million.

Fast forward to post-All-Star break, and Bregman has found his stride and is slowly turning into the player he was expected to be when he signed.

Alex Bregman is on a heater

Over the last seven days, Bregman is slashing .318/.375/.591, good for a .966 OPS with one home run and three doubles. In Chicago's current series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Bregman is 7-for-10 with three doubles and a home run.

Bregman has raised his batting average 11 points and his OPS 31 points in just two days against the Cardinals.

The one thing about Bregman's recent hot streak is that most of it has come on the road. At home this season, Bregman has slashed just .212/.325/.315 with four home runs.

Wrigley Field has recently played as more of a pitcher's park than usual, but it is still somewhere that Bregman needs to begin producing more at, especially considering the hefty paycheck he's commanding for the next four seasons.

Alex Bregman is the key to a deep postseason run

Bregman's season average still sits at just .245, but the recent production is a promising sign that hasn't been prevalent at any point during the season. It's no surprise that Chicago has started its winning ways back up just as Bregman has started to find his stride and become a productive bat in the middle of the Cubs' order.

Bregman's success and postseason experience will play a pivotal role in Chicago's ability to make a postseason run and advance past the NLDS for the first time since 2017.
